Central Site Deployment for VPN Connectivity

When deploying a multi-site VPN rollout, businesses usually implement a 'hub and spoke' design where the satellite offices (the spoke) create a VPN connection back to the head office (the hub). The Hub usually hosts key applications and services such as Exchange Email servers, Database servers and telephony platforms. These services require high levels of bandwidth to function efficiently and are critical to the day-to-day operation of the business.

The UBM can be configured to act as the central site link aggregator and functions on top of the existing VPN infrastructure (IPSEC, PPTP, L2TP etc.) or can form the basis of a new IPVPN/MPLS deployment. The central UBM terminates the 'Virtual Tunnels' from the UBM device at the satellite offices. These 'Virtual Tunnels' form the basis of communication between the hub and spoke and enable aggregation features such as bonding and load balancing between the sites.

Deployed at the centre site, the UBM provides the following possibilities:

  • Bond multiple circuits from multiple remote sites (per packet)
  • Implement Tunnel Load Balancing (per flow)
  • Provide VPN failover should link failure occur
  • Dedicate circuits for a specific service or high priority sites
