Load Balancing Switch

A Load Balancing Switch is a hardware appliance designed to distribute TCP requests across multiple servers using load balancing algorithms.

The Load Balancing Switch fits between the Internet connection and the web farm. Incoming requests to the switch all use the same IP address before being forwarded by the switch to a web server. Forwarding of the incoming requests by the switch is based on the load balancing algorithm that is implemented. The Load Balancing Switch will frequently ping the servers to see if they are busy.

Multiple Load Balancing Switches can be also installed to eliminate the switch appliance from being the single point of failure for an application.
